Acupuncture found effective in clinical trial, for chronic constipation.

Electro-acupuncture (EA) appears to be a safe and effective treatment for severe chronic constipation (SCC) in women, with long-lasting effects that persist for at least 24 weeks after treatment has ended. In a study by Chinese researchers, 446 female patients were randomly assigned to receive either prucalopride, a prokinetic drug, for 32 weeks, or 28 sessions of EA over an eight-week period, followed by a 24-week period with no treatment. Treatment response was defined as having at least three complete spontaneous bowel movements (CSBMs), as well as an increase of more than one CSBM from baseline, for at least six weeks during the eight-week treatment period. The proportion of responders was similar in both groups, with 25.23% of patients in the EA group and 25.89% in the prucalopride group achieving the treatment response. The EA group experienced fewer adverse effects compared to the prucalopride group.
